One device · everyone takes a turn
Pass-and-play games for friends
A pass-and-play game lets people take turns on one shared device instead of asking everyone to install the same game. Word Spy uses that format for a social deduction word game you can play around a table.
How Word Spy uses pass-and-play
Add 4–10 names, then pass the phone or tablet to each person for a private word reveal. Most players receive the same word; one imposter sees a related word. After each player gives one clue, the group discusses and passes the device for a secret vote.
When a one-phone party game is a good fit
- Friends are together in person and want to start quickly.
- The group wants an interactive multiplayer game without separate accounts.
- Players enjoy bluffing, short clues, and trying to read each other.
- You want a simple game that explains unfamiliar words with a picture and brief meaning.
Is a pass-and-play game the same as online multiplayer?
Not necessarily. In pass-and-play, the group shares a device and takes turns in person. Online multiplayer usually connects players on separate devices over a network. Word Spy is designed for the shared-device, in-the-same-room format.
